Bruce and Stephanie Larkham were the original developers of the Hawker Tennis Centre. They built the Centre in 1979 and over the next 20 years ran a successful coaching business. The original development consisted of six courts, but expanded 10 years later to the present eight synthetic grass courts (6 with lights), 4 hard courts, a clubhouse and pro shop. The Centre is nicely landscaped with lawns, gardens and gazebos. The business was family owned and operated with their sons, Brent and Todd, contributing to the day-to-day running of the Centre until they embarked on professional tennis careers. Brent and Todd were taught tennis by their parents, Bruce and Stephanie, who were both top players. Bruce won the ACT Resident Title a record seven years in a row, and travelled overseas in the 1960s, winning several tournaments in Europe. It was there he met Stephanie, who was a top British player, and played county tennis for Middlesex. Bruce and Stephanie coached full-time for 20 years at Hawker, and also taught their sons, Brent and Todd, how to teach tennis. Local coach Michael Arnaudon has taken over the lease of the Centre. Michael was taught the game by Bruce and Stephanie and continued his association with the tennis centre by coaching under the guidance of Todd in January, 2004. He took over the running of the centre after Todd was appointed Tennis ACT State Coach in July, 2005.
