Tennis ACT has received funding in the 2009/10 Health Promotion Sponsorship Funding Round to assist in delivering a more SunSmart sport. Tennis ACT is committed toward implementing measures and encouraging positive sun protection behaviour and role modelling that is aimed toward minimizing overall UV exposure.

Cancer Council ACT looks forward to assisting Tennis ACT promote and reinforce the importance of effective sun protection behaviour and attitudes amongst players, workers, members, and guests alike over 2009-10.

Local workplaces and sporting clubs can play a leading role in actively promoting and reinforcing this important public health message throughout Canberra. Simple things like positive role modelling, education and training, practical policy and the implementation of long term strategies that are aimed to improve the quality of shade in popular settings can all go a long way toward minimising UVR exposure.

Every year in Australia 1700 people die from skin cancer with melanoma being the 3rd most common diagnosed cancer in both women and men and accounts for 11 per cent of all cancers.  It is also one of the few almost totally preventable cancers.

Sadly, melanoma is the most common diagnosed cancer amongst young Australians aged between 12 and 24 years old, with more than double the number of cases than any other kind of cancer.

This summer take particular care when outdoors and protect yourself in 5 ways from skin cancer when UV levels reach 3 and above- strong enough to damage your unprotected skin and increase your risk of skin cancer.
